War Requiem is frequently cited as the most significant choral work of the 20th century.  It was premiered in 1962 in for the consecration of the new St. Michael's Cathedral in Coventry, England, next to the ruins of the old cathedral, destroyed by Germam air raids in November, 1940.

In this work, Britten sets the traditional Latin Requiem liturgy alongside and interwoven with poetry by Wilfred Owen, a World War I British officer, killed in the final days of that war in France.  Owen's poetry was chosen to reflect on many specific images in the Requiem text.  In all, the work is a unique and unified tapestry of words and music that reflects on the many facets of war, and the hope for peace in the afterlife.
