Announcing the second program in our second season: Celestial Echoes—both resounding and whispered—inspired by the light and hope of a realm beyond our place and time. There are two performances: Friday, January 22, 7:30 PM and Saturday, January 23, 8:00PM The program features Herbert Howell’s breathtaking Requiem. Howell’s rich harmonic language in this unaccompanied work fro double choir suggests influences of Debussy and Ravel as well as American jazz and Gregorian chant. Perhaps because of its deeply intimate and personal expression, the Requiem, written in the early 1932, was not published until 1980, just a few years before the composer’s death. The rest of the program is filled with transcendent music from the English and American choral traditions, including two Negro spirituals and a setting of the popular gospel hymn, “Precious Lord, Take My Hand,” arranged by Nathan Carter, longtime choral director at Morgan State University. Malcolm Matthews, in addition to providing stunning organ accompaniments to anthems by David Conte, Gerald Finzi, and Charles Wood, will play solo organ selections by Bach and Widor. This Christian service celebrates the Christmas story and prophecies through Old and New Testament scripture readings interspersed with hymns and carols. It has been observed since 1918 on Christmas Eve at King’s College, Cambridge, England, and more recently has become featured in American churches at Christmastime. The lessons will be read by volunteers and staff at the museum, as well as members of the surrounding communities, and the music will include special arrangements of traditional Christmas pieces, as well as uniquely American works of the season. The Genesee Harmonic Society is a group of several dozen men and women, mainly volunteers and staff at the museum, which performs late eighteenth- through early twentieth-century American choral music, giving four or five concerts each year during the spring, summer, and fall, as well as at special events in the area. The group has been in existence since 1990, and for the past 6 years has been under the direction of Gian Carlo Cervone. Kathy Griswold accompanies at the piano, and organist Jeremy Rath will perform as well. We invite and welcome everyone to celebrate with us this very special event. More information

Time: 7:30pm. Admission: $15. Age restrictions: All Ages. Box office: (585) 223-9006. Address: 8 Wickford Way. The tango is considered to be one of the most sensual of dance forms. Although one would not think of a choir and orchestra in such a category, GVOC takes up the challenge to provide a program of music that is simultaneously pious and provocative. We must provide a warning that the central work of the program, Martin Palmeri’s Misa a Buenos Aires, just might make it very, very difficult for you to stay still in your seat. The work tastefully honors two traditions of Argentinean culture: its Catholicism and its Tango. The program also features works by the legendary Astor Piazzolla, and will include other choral and instrumental music inspired by dance. Rarely heard in Rochester, enjoy the Bandoneón, the unique, Argentinean type of accordion that is essential to the Argentinean tango and to the repertoire on this program. More information

Singers of Madrigalia Take to the Podium ROCHESTER, NY – The members of Madrigalia come from all professions. Whether they are doctors, lawyers, teachers, real estate agents, or marketing professionals, they are united by their common passion for singing. For Madrigalia’s closing concert of the 2013-2014 season, the singers will focus that passion not only on singing, but also on planning and producing the entire program. “Many choruses periodically plan concerts with repertoire chosen by their members,” said Dan McInerney, Business Administrator for the ensemble and long-time tenor. “But Madrigalia took that idea one step further and decided to also have members conduct the rehearsals and performances. With several music teachers and conductors in the group, it seemed like a natural progression of the idea.” May’s concert program, entitled “Singer’s Choice,” is organized into four sections: “Songs of Singing,” “Songs of Wind, Earth, and Light,” “Songs of Heritage,” and “Songs of Spirit.” The light program predominately features music of American composers, including Eric Whitacre, Craig Hella Johnson, Frank Ticheli, Morten Lauridsen, and Z. Randall Stroope. Initially a group that performed only Renaissance madrigals, Madrigalia concerts now draw from a much wider repertoire of music spanning several centuries. Programs often include premieres of new works and works of American composers. The concerts will take place across the area: May 17 at the United Congregational Church of Christ in Fairport and then on May 18 at Baptist Temple in Rochester. More information

Opening the program are two sprightly and familiar classics by Mozart: the offertory Benedictus sit Deus and the ever-popular motet Exsultate, Jubilate. Gabriel Fauré’s exotic, serene Pavane sets the Germanic music in perfect relief. Brilliant soprano Alisa Peterson, a favorite in Rochester from her award-winning Classical Idol appearances, joins Jessica Ann Best, Matthew Valverde and Derrick Smith as soloist for this evening of choral classics. Eric Townell conducts the ROS Orchestra. More information

The ROS presents “Rochester Sings!” with Gibbs & Main, Karine Stone, Artistic Director, and the Genesee Community Charter School Join us as we restore and celebrate the values that make our city great as we re-create the centennial of Rochester’s weekly Friday Sings. These popular civic events promoted tolerance, understanding, community spirit and constructive enjoyment through voices lifted in song. The last such event was June 7, 1912, with selections from the Rochester Songbook. It’s a joy to rediscover these long-familiar favorites, moving anthems, period pieces by Stephen Foster and others, and patriotic selections that catch the heart. While we celebrate the historic event, Gibbs & Main help us look forward to the fresh music of tomorrow with the world-premiere of Lulu, by Rochester’s own Diego Garcia. Celebrate the very best qualities of the city we love with the best artists our musical city has to offer. Get your own Rochester Songbook, log in to the special web presence for Rochester Sings!, sing along and let us hear your voice for the better. SCHOOL OF THE ARTS AND THE ROCHESTER ORATORIO SOCIETY PRESENT “BETTER TOGETHER” A CELEBRATION OF GREAT CHORAL CLASSICS Rochester, New York – In an unprecedented collaboration, the Rochester Oratorio Society and the School of the Arts will present a concert of great choral classics on Sunday, May 20, 2012, at 2:00 PM, in the Allen Main Stage Theatre at the School of the Arts, 45 Prince Street at University Avenue. Nocon & Associates, a private wealth advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services, Inc., is the corporate sponsor for the event. Better Together features the SOTA Concert Choir and will benefit the Friends of the School of the Arts and the ROS Endowment Fund. Works by Schubert, Mozart, Handel and Lauridsen are highlighted on the program along with contemporary music featuring young artists from SOTA. “This is the future for our art form,” notes ROS Artistic Director Eric Townell. “The SOTA Concert Choir sounds great, and they have terrific spirit. We hope to see several SOTA alumni among the ranks of the ROS in future years.” “The Better Together concert is a wonderful opportunity to work in collaboration,” says John Gabriele, who teaches piano and music theory at SOTA and directs the Concert Choir. “The ROS does great things in this city and we’re happy to be associated with them.” The School of the Arts Concert Choir recently earned national renown in its first-ever competitive outing, taking the gold medal and four of seven Maestro awards in the Heritage Choral Festival in Washington, DC. Several students were recognized for their solo ability in addition to their work with the choir. The School of the Arts – SOTA – is a public city school located in the heart of Rochester’s Cultural District. The Friends of School of the Arts, a 15-member volunteer board, focus their energies on responding to student needs at SOTA. Fundraising events and grants are the primary source of funding. “The majority of the 1,200 SOTA students are able to more fully participate in their arts education programs with financial support from Friends,” says Jean M. Graupman, Executive Director of Friends of SOTA. “School of the Arts students’ success in the academics, arts and sports result, in part, from an arts-based education through which their creative energies are internalized. Preparation, practice and structure become a natural part of their future endeavors.” The Rochester Oratorio Society, now in its 66th season of concerts and its sixth under Townell, is the leading large, adult mixed chorus in the area. In addition to concerts and tour performances, the ROS each year creates collaborative projects that build civic identity and enhance the environment for the arts in Rochester. “Hopefully we can float all the boats a little bit higher,” says Townell. Tickets for Better Together are $25.00 for and $10.00 for students with ID. They are on sale at all local Wegmans. Tickets may also be purchased through the ROS website at www.ROSsings.org, the Friends of SOTA website at www.friendsofsota.org, or the SOTA website at www.sotarochester.org, or by calling the ROS office at 585-473-2234.
