Concentus joins the Elmgrove United Methodist Church in presenting a new Chamber-Chorus presentation of Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater. The concert will include other seasonal Easter music. Our May 11th concert Love, Beauty, Laughter!, is a selection of music chosen from the 19th and 20th centuries. Included in this program: Five Hebrew Love Songs, a set of delicate Hebrew poems set to music by Grammy Award-winning composer Eric Whitacre capturing moments of love shared with his wife, Hila Plitmann, author of the poetry upon which the music is based; Johannes Brahms’ Nänie, an elegy on the transience of life, as well as a memorial to a dear friend; and In Windsor Forest by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Based on Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor, this cantata encompasses celebration, joy, exuberance and majesty as well as wit and just plain fun. We believe that this concert of great music performed by our chorus and orchestra members will be both entertaining and inspirational.

The program will feature two works: Magnificat, or the Canticle of Mary, Mary’s powerful and joyous prayer, set to music by 18th century Italian composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi and Seven Joys of Christmas, a sequence of carols celebrating the joys of the season: the joy of love, of bells, of Mary, of children, of the new year, of dance and of song by 20th century composer Kirke Mechem. Seasonal choral and instrumental favorites will round out this delightful holiday program.

The is the Greece Performing Arts Society’s (GPAS) fund raising concert. Funds raised provide financial support to the five organizations which come under GPAS: Greece Choral Society, Greece Symphony Orchestra, Greece Jazz Band, Greece Community Orchestra and the Greece Concert Band.
It’s a cabaret setting (card tables and chairs arranged throughout the gym. Food and refreshments are available for purchase. Each group, takes turns, performing approximately 20 minutes. Gift items are raffled off between performances.
Some of the selections, the Greece Choral Society will sing are: “The Rose“; ”Muddy Water” (from the musical, “Big River”); a medley of “Broadway Show-Stoppers“: “Everything’s Coming Up Roses”, “People”, “With a Little Bit of Luck”, “On a Clear Day (You can See Forever), “Try to Remember”, “That’s Entertainment”; “All I Ask of You” (from “The Phantom of the Opera”) and “Do You Hear the People Sing?” (from “Les Miserables”).
Come join us! It’s a nice night out during these cold, winter evenings, to hear some wonderful “Pops” music, most of which I’m sure you already know…and love!

The heavens have inspired the imaginations of countless composers over the centuries, and the centerpiece of this concert is the deeply inspired “Requiem” of Maurice Duruflé. The Halloran-All Saints organ at the cathedral takes a central role in this work with organist Peter Dubois and a chamber orchestra led by the quintet Gibbs & Main. “BETTER TOGETHER”
A CELEBRATION OF GREAT CHORAL CLASSICS
Rochester, New York – In an unprecedented collaboration, the Rochester Oratorio Society and
the School of the Arts will present a concert of great choral classics on Sunday, May 20, 2012, at
2:00 PM, in the Allen Main Stage Theatre at the School of the Arts, 45 Prince Street at University
Avenue. Nocon & Associates, a private wealth advisory practice of Ameriprise Financial Services,
Inc., is the corporate sponsor for the event. Better Together features the SOTA Concert Choir and
will benefit the Friends of the School of the Arts and the ROS Endowment Fund.
Works by Schubert, Mozart, Handel and Lauridsen are highlighted on the program along with
contemporary music featuring young artists from SOTA. “This is the future for our art form,” notes
ROS Artistic Director Eric Townell. “The SOTA Concert Choir sounds great, and they have terrific
spirit. We hope to see several SOTA alumni among the ranks of the ROS in future years.”
“The Better Together concert is a wonderful opportunity to work in collaboration,” says John
Gabriele, who teaches piano and music theory at SOTA and directs the Concert Choir. “The ROS
does great things in this city and we’re happy to be associated with them.”
The School of the Arts Concert Choir recently earned national renown in its first-ever competitive
outing, taking the gold medal and four of seven Maestro awards in the Heritage Choral Festival in
Washington, DC. Several students were recognized for their solo ability in addition to their work
with the choir.
The School of the Arts – SOTA – is a public city school located in the heart of Rochester’s Cultural
District. The Friends of School of the Arts, a 15-member volunteer board, focus their energies on
responding to student needs at SOTA. Fundraising events and grants are the primary source of
funding. “The majority of the 1,200 SOTA students are able to more fully participate in their arts
education programs with financial support from Friends,” says Jean M. Graupman, Executive
Director of Friends of SOTA. “School of the Arts students’ success in the academics, arts and
sports result, in part, from an arts-based education through which their creative energies are
internalized. Preparation, practice and structure become a natural part of their future endeavors.”
The Rochester Oratorio Society, now in its 66th season of concerts and its sixth under Townell, is
the leading large, adult mixed chorus in the area. In addition to concerts and tour performances,
the ROS each year creates collaborative projects that build civic identity and enhance the
environment for the arts in Rochester. “Hopefully we can float all the boats a little bit higher,” says
Townell.

We’re singing about dancing this irresistibly energetic evening. The ROS starts the tune with Bizet’s light and lilting “Valse avec Choeur.” The richness of woodwinds fills out our unique version of Brahms’s beloved “Liebeslieder” Waltzes, with original choreography by Missy Pfohl Smith. Then, BIODANCE takes the stage for the world-premiere performance of Scherzo, a new work by the internationally recognized choreographer and SUNY-Brockport artist Bill Evans, set to the music of Brahms. Six lusty, fun and sentimental Songs from the Bavarian Highlands by Edward Elgar (sung in English) will send you out with a skip in your step. Join The Lyric Chorale in a concert of American music featuring Carol Barnett’s “The World Beloved: A Bluegrass Mass”. The text, which is very loosely based on the Latin Mass, is a commentary on the joys and struggles of humanity’s faith journey. The music, which in turn is rollicking, dark, joyful and toe-tapping, is accompanied by a bluegrass band. Also included will be works by Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Foster, and Aaron Copland. The Bowties will add their distinctive style with a set of jazz favorites.
